Glass

Nordic glass has a long tradition and is known for its high quality, clean lines and innovative design. Glass production in the Nordic region began in the 16th century but had its big breakthrough in the 19th and 20th centuries with prominent glassworks in Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

From the 19th century, Sweden and Finland established major glassworks, such as Kosta Boda, Orrefors, Iittala and Riihimäki. Production focused on utility glass, crystal and decorative objects.
During the 20th century, Art Glass became an important part of Nordic design, especially through techniques such as graal glass and Ariel (developed at Orrefors). Designers such as Simon Gate, Edward Hald and Vicke Lindstrand put Sweden on the international glass map.
-From the 1950s to the 1970s, Danish and Finnish design had a major impact, with designers such as Tapio Wirkkala, Timo Sarpaneva and Per Lütken. Glass became simpler, more sculptural and inspired by natural forms.
In the 21st century, Nordic glassmakers have faced challenges from mass production and competition abroad. Many glassworks have closed down, but artisanal studio glass lives on through artists such as Bertil Vallien and Kjell Engman. Today, Nordic glass is internationally sought after and is characterized by its pure design, technical innovations and high quality craftsmanship.
