Birger Åström

Birger Åström (1930-2020) was a Swedish ceramicist active in Ås, where he ran his own workshop for most of his life. He is particularly known for his utilitarian objects such as bowls, vases and candleholders, as well as his sculptures of cloudberries and apples. Åström experimented extensively with glazes and in 1969 acquired a French kiln to work with controlled reduction firing, which gave his ceramics a unique character. In addition to smaller utilitarian objects, he also created larger works of art and public sculptures, such as "Sjöluren", a large sculpture that used to stand at his workshop but was later moved to a location in Örnsköldsvik.
