Nuutajärvi

Nuutajärvi Glassworks is Finland's oldest glassworks, founded in 1793 in Urjala. It was one of the most significant players in Finnish glass art and design in the 20th century. The glassworks became known for its high-quality art and utility glass and its collaboration with leading designers.
In the 1950s and 60s, Nuutajärvi became a central place for Finnish design. Among the most prominent designers were:
- Kaj Franck - created the iconic Kartio series (1958) and the Kilta series.
- Saara Hopea - known for her colored drinking glasses and stylish tableware.
- Oiva Toikka - created the famous Birds by Toikka glass birds, which became internationally sought-after collectibles.
Nuutajärvi merged with Iittala in 1988, and in 2014 production moved entirely to Iittala's Hämeenlinna factory. Despite the closure of the glassworks itself, its legacy lives on through Iittala, and Nuutajärvi remains an important place for glass art and craft in Finland.
