Stonewear

Nordic ceramics have a long tradition and are known for their combination of functionality, craftsmanship and aesthetics. It has its roots in Old Norse ceramics but developed particularly in the 20th century through the influence of modernism, functionalism and local craft traditions.

In Sweden, Upsala-Ekeby, Gustavsberg and Rörstrand have been prominent, with designers such as Wilhelm Kåge, Stig Lindberg, Mari Simmulson, Lisa Larson and Berndt Friberg. Their work ranges from rustic stoneware to playful figurines and stylish utility items.

In Denmark, Royal Copenhagen and Bjørn Wiinblad made their mark with detailed earthenware and stylized design, while Niels Thorsson and Arne Bang focused on austere modernism.

Finland is known for Arabia, where designers such as Kaj Franck, Annikki Hovisaari and Birger Kaipiainen created iconic tableware and art ceramics.

Often characterized by natural colours, simple shapes, and experimental glazes, Nordic ceramics' timeless designs continue to be sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts.
